Parasite Prevention & Control

ParasitePrevParasites are organisms that live on or in us or our pets. They can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, muscle aches and fever. Untreated, they can be life threatening. In Arizona, the three most common internal parasites are Coccidia, Giardia and tapeworm. Tapeworm occurs in every 1 out of 120 dogs in Arizona.

Heartworm is also a problem. In one study, more than 3 million dogs were sampled for heartworm antigen beginning in 2000. The study found 1.2 percent of dogs in the West tested positive. It was second only to the Southeast, where 3.9 percent tested positive. Significantly, the testing was done on pets who were well cared for and had regular wellness checks.

With that in mind, parasite testing is an important component of your pet’s health. We can recommend a schedule for parasite testing, explain signs of parasites to look for at home, review ways to control parasites in and around your home, and discuss treatment options if your pet has parasites. Preventing parasites in your pets also helps protect children and other family members.

Parasites are not just a nuisance. They can carry serious diseases that affect your pet’s overall health and longevity. Together, we can stamp them out.
