Happy and Healthy Cats

In honor of National Cat Health month the CATalyst Council has released a list of 8 ways cat owners can keep their feline friends happy, healthy and purring all year long.

Tips for keeping your cat

happy and healthy

  1.        Visit the Veterinarian. While you and your cat may dread a trip to your veterinarian many practices like ours,  are cat friendly. These practices can show leery owners and their pets ways to make the trip less stressful. Providing good health care, especially preventative care, including annual to biannual exams can help your cats have a longer, more comfortable life. Regular exams can spot trends and address problems early.
  2.        Microchip your cat. In addition to a collar and identification tag, owners should ask about microchipping their feline friend. This type of permanent identification makes a reunion between you and your cat more likely.
  3.        Go outside. Yes, allowing your cat to go outside here in Fountain Hills does pose risks. However, there are ways that you can make it safer. Allowing cats to go outside broadens their horizons and helps reduce unwanted stress like behaviors. So if you do allow them to go out, do it safely. Cats can be walked on a leash or allowed outside in special outdoor pens that protect them from the wildlife and feral cats.
  4.        Scratch the surface. Provide a place for your cat to scratch, stretch and care for their claws. Scratching is an important aspect of feline behavior. Providing a long sturdy scratching post in a vertical, horizontal or angled position is a good way to keep your cat happy ….and your sofa too!
  5.        Train together. Cats are smart and can be trained to do fun tricks like dogs and the mental and physical stimulation is great for them. An added bonus is that training will strengthen the bond between you and your cat which will certainly make your cat happy.
  6.        Work for food. Feline obesity is a huge problem in the country and one way to combat it is for owners to make their cats work for food.  Food toys are available to channel a cat’s natural hunting drive and release kibble in small amounts. Another option is to hide your cat’s food in different places so that they have to work to find it.
  7.        Get your cat acclimated to the carrier. May cat owner’s find that the worst part about taking their cat’s anywhere is getting their cat in to the carrier. Owners should work with their cat at home making their carrier a safe secure and inviting place to be prior to veterinary visits or family vacations. When the time comes your cat will be happy to get in the carrier and go off on an adventure. Visit http://www.catvets.com/cat-owners/brochures or check out our article on “Getting your Cat to the Veterinarian”.
  8.        Provide prey toys. One of the easiest ways to make your cat happy is with a new prey toy. Cats are natural hunters and love chasing, pouncing, leaping, swatting and stalking prey even when it’s not the real thing. There are many types of prey toys available check out amazon or our hospital store.

Cats are wonderful creatures and are easy to make happy. Most cats just want a home with a comfy couch they can stretch out on and a loving scratch behind their ears. Everyone here at Palisades Veterinary Hospital wants to encourage all cat owners to adopt some of these tips to spoil their “purrfect” feline friend.
