Wellness Exams

Wellness care is the foundation of your pet’s long-term health and vitality. Regular check-ups ensure proper growth and development, bring to light any unique health trends, and enable us to spot and head off potential problems before they grow into full-blown health issues. By establishing a regular health history, we can compile a fuller, richer picture of your pet’s health – a real benefit when it comes to making tough decisions about treatment as your pet ages.

Typical wellness care exams can include blood screenings, radiographs, blood pressure checks, dental check-up, dietary evaluation and education, heartworm and parasite testing and prevention, and vaccinations. These exams help us get to know your pet, so we can formulate the best wellness plan for them and answer any questions that may be on your mind.

As your pet ages, the need for these routine exams becomes even more critical in helping us detect early signs of disease. For dogs and cats 7 years and older, we offer senior wellness testing for early detection that includes a thorough physical exam, complete blood work, thyroid profile, and a urinalysis. If we suspect a problem, these tests can help detect and confirm it before the damage becomes irreversible.

Vaccinations

Vaccines are a critical part of all wellness plans as they help pets live longer, healthier lives. Advances in veterinary vaccines have helped to stamp out diseases that once were common and fatal; and each year, they eradicate more contagious diseases. We do that through a schedule of regular vaccines tailored to the individual needs of your pet.

Some vaccines are considered core vaccines and should be administered to all pets; others are optional and may be recommended based on certain factors such as risk for exposure to a specific disease. Vaccine recommendations can also change throughout a pet’s life as travel habits and other factors change. We consider every variable as we determine which vaccines your pet should receive.

We understand that your pet is unique and that no single vaccine program will be idea for every pet in every situation.

Parasite Prevention & Control

Parasites are organisms that live on or in us or our pets. They can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, muscle aches and fever. Untreated, they can be life threatening. In Arizona, the three most common internal parasites are Coccidia, Giardia and tapeworm. Tapeworm occurs in every 1 out of 120 dogs in Arizona. Heartworms are also a problem. One study found that dogs in the West tested positive more frequently than any other except for the Southeast. Significantly, the testing was done on pets who were well cared for and had regular wellness checks.

With that in mind, we recommend scheduling regular appointments for parasite testing depending on where you live and where your pet plays. We will explain the signs of parasites to look for at home, review ways to control parasites in and around your home and discuss treatment options if your pet has parasites. Preventing parasites in your pets also helps protect children and other family members as they can carry serious diseases that affect everyone’s overall health and well-being.
